🦂 Macro Brief, Wednesday, August 12, 2026

Bottom line: Brent's 12% week now has official backing: Washington expects about 600,000 barrels a day to stay offline through 2027 and has lifted its fuel-price forecasts. Long-dated Treasury yields and gold both rose while company borrowing conditions stayed easy, so this reads as a fuel and government-debt problem, not a growth break. Today's CPI and Thursday's auctions are the tests.

1. Today’s Macro Signal

Brent crude sits at $88.47, up 12.09% in seven days, and the disruption behind it now carries an official end-date: Washington expects Iran-war supply losses near 600,000 barrels a day to last through the end of 2027, with 2026 gasoline and diesel price forecasts raised 3.7% and 5.4%. The 30-year Treasury yield is 5.25% and the inflation rate implied by 10-year Treasury prices rose 5 basis points, while the extra interest weaker companies pay to borrow narrowed slightly. That points to a fuel-cost and government-borrowing problem, not a broad growth break. Today’s July CPI is the first test; Thursday brings producer prices and the 10- and 30-year Treasury auctions.

3. Today’s Delta

Net change: The oil disruption picked up an official 2027 end-date, a Federal Reserve official put more rate increases back on the table as bond-implied inflation rose, and the yen has surrendered half its intervention gain.

iran-hormuz-oil · ↑ Raised

Evidence: Washington now expects roughly 600,000 barrels a day of lost supply to persist through the end of 2027, and official 2026 gasoline and diesel price forecasts were raised 3.7% and 5.4%.

Next check: Three straight sessions of Hormuz transit counts, war-risk shipping insurance quotes and pump prices improving together.

fed-inflation-rates · ↑ Raised

Evidence: Federal Reserve official Beth Hammack said a number of rate increases may be needed to get inflation to 2%, while the inflation rate implied by 10-year Treasury prices rose 5 basis points to 2.27% and the 30-year yield reached 5.25%.

Next check: Today’s July CPI, then Thursday’s 10- and 30-year auctions, where weak demand would push long yields higher again.

official-currency-defense · ↓ Lowered

Evidence: The dollar is back at ¥159.06, up 0.84% on the week, after the yen gave up about half of the gain it made when authorities bought it in July.

Next check: Whether officials step in again above ¥160, or the Bank of Japan signals a rate move instead.

4. Forward Event Checkpoints

Thu, Aug 13

U.S. PPI

Base case: Watch the pipeline into PCE, especially the components that matter for the Fed rather than the headline noise alone.

Watch: Hotter → Hot PPI tends to reinforce higher-for-longer and lean the dollar and front-end yields up. · Cooler → Cool PPI tends to support the disinflation path, especially if the PCE-relevant components also soften.

Thu, Aug 13

10Y and 30Y Treasury Auction Window

Base case: Auction demand is a direct read on duration appetite. Tail risk matters more than the headline stop.

Watch: Hotter → Weak auction demand usually hits long duration and can spill into broader risk if supply stress is already live. · Cooler → Strong auction demand can relieve duration pressure and steady the rates complex.

Fri, Aug 14

Retail Sales

Base case: Focus on control-group strength versus consumer fatigue. This is less about the headline and more about whether demand is rolling over.

Watch: Hotter → A strong control-group print usually leans yields and the dollar up and delays recession pricing. · Cooler → A weak print usually helps duration first, though a sharp miss can turn into a growth scare.
