Macro Brief, Wed Oct 7: Brent back above $100 as the 10-year sale

Bottom line: Brent is back above $100 and the dollar is firmer, pulling gold, miners and crypto lower after a week in which short-term Treasury yields had been falling. Today's $39 billion 10-year auction and the Fed's September minutes decide whether long-term yields climb into the October 14 inflation report.

1. Today’s Macro Signal

The dollar has firmed too, hours before the Treasury sells $39 billion of 10-year notes. Through Tuesday, bonds had been getting some relief: the 2-year Treasury yield fell 10bp (0.10 percentage points) in five sessions, faster than long-term yields, as traders trimmed bets on another Fed hike. Pricier oil works against that, because higher fuel costs keep inflation, and the case for a hike, alive. Gold, gold miners and crypto are all lower this morning. The auction lands at 17:00 UTC and the minutes of the Fed's September meeting follow at 18:00 UTC, so by this afternoon we'll know whether long-term yields head into the October 14 inflation report higher or lower.

3. Today’s Delta

Sweep finding, crowding positioning: The most one-sided bets are still leveraged funds short Treasury futures as part of the "basis trade," and long-only money packed into a narrow group of AI hardware and power stocks; the yen carry trade has partly…

Net change: Oil back above $100 is lifting the dollar and pressing gold and crypto, just as today's 10-year auction and Fed minutes test the recent drop in short-term yields.

Fed / Inflation / Rates · Held

Evidence: The 2s10s (the gap between short- and long-term Treasury yields) spread, the gap between 10-year and 2-year yields, reached 0.48%, up 11bp (0.11 percentage points) in five sessions, bigger than all but 13 of the last 120 five-session moves, because short-term yields fell faster.

Next check: 2-year holds below 4.85% through October 14.

4. Forward Event Checkpoints

Thu, Oct 8

30-Year Bond Auction (reopening)

Base case: $22.0 billion offered. How the auction is received matters more than the headline yield: bid-to-cover, the indirect share of competitive bids, and the dealer share versus the prior six same-term auctions.

Watch: Strong demand → Solid demand at the auction usually steadies long-term yields and calms other markets. · Weak demand → Weak demand at the auction usually pushes long-term yields up and can knock stocks if the Treasury is already struggling to place its debt.

Wed, Oct 14

U.S. CPI

Base case: The headline and core numbers, plus rent and services prices, say whether inflation is still cooling or has stalled. This release covers 2026-09, not the release month.

Watch: A surprise is 0.1 point or more away from the Cleveland Fed nowcast.

Thu, Oct 15

U.S. PPI

Base case: Producer prices feed the PCE inflation measure the Fed targets, so the parts that flow into PCE matter more than the headline. This release covers 2026-09, not the release month.

Wed, Oct 28

FOMC Decision and Press Conference

Base case: The statement, the rate projections and Powell's press conference matter more than the rate decision itself.

Watch: Hotter → A hawkish hold (no cuts in sight) usually lifts the dollar, pushes long-term bond prices down and dents stocks. · Cooler → A dovish hold or a path to cuts usually lifts long-term bond prices and stocks, unless worries about growth are already loud.

Thu, Oct 29

Core and Headline PCE

Base case: This is the inflation measure the Fed targets. Core PCE and services prices decide whether the Fed will hike again or pause.

Watch: Hotter → A hot PCE usually pushes short-term Treasury yields and the dollar up and long-term bond prices and stocks down. · Cooler → A cool PCE usually pulls short-term Treasury yields and the dollar down and lifts long-term bond prices, gold, bitcoin and stocks.

Fri, Oct 30

BOJ Decision

Base case: The policy rate, the bond-buying language, and whether the Bank of Japan keeps tightening while so many trades are funded with cheap yen.

Watch: Hotter → A hawkish Bank of Japan usually strengthens the yen and squeezes trades funded with borrowed yen, which can spill into other markets. · Cooler → A dovish Bank of Japan keeps yen borrowing cheap and pushes the risk of those trades unwinding further out.

Fri, Nov 6

University of Michigan Sentiment (preliminary)

Base case: Payrolls, the unemployment rate, wages and revisions together say whether the job market is cooling gently or cracking. This release covers 2026-10, not the release month.

Watch: Payrolls, the unemployment rate, wages and revisions together say whether the job market is cooling gently or cracking.

5. Decision Research

Crowding Positioning · dallasfed.org

Finding: Crowded positions are a vulnerability, not evidence that a forced sale has begun. Keep the decision at **consider**, not act.

What changed: A Federal Reserve analysis separates financed Treasury trades from other positions that look similar in futures data; the latest verified auction and fund-flow evidence does not establish a buyers' strike. (federalreserve.gov)(fiscaldata.treasury.gov)(ici.org)

Watch: Treasury financing costs and their dispersion, repeated note-auction results, fund flows, and whether rising yields coincide with widening credit spreads.
