Dollar Plumbing Versus Gold
Tracks whether Federal Reserve balance-sheet runoff and a drained reverse-repo facility are removing the buffer that has absorbed reserve drain, and whether a falling dollar with a persistent metals bid is the first market read on that.
August 29 update: the invalidation completed. The dollar index rose 0.85% to 99.70, a second consecutive week of recovery, and this time gold did not hold, down 4.59% with silver 4.44% and miners 4.16%, which is the row's own stated close condition. The plumbing itself produced nothing again: the balance sheet shrank 0.22% to $6.73 trillion with the reverse repo facility drained, yet SOFR printed 3.64% against effective fed funds at 3.63% and financial conditions were unchanged at -0.57, so reserve drain is still invisible in the price of money. Next check: a sustained SOFR-to-fed-funds gap, reserve balances falling further with the facility at zero, or a quarter-end with visible repo pressure keeps this open; absent any of those, this retires next window. August 28 update: half the invalidation path ran and the other half did not. The dollar index rose 0.33% to 99.17, a recovery from 98.80, while gold rose 2.72%, silver 3.01%, and miners 7.31%, so the dollar rebuilt without gold stalling. No plumbing measure moved in the window: no reserve-balance, effective-funds, or repo evidence surfaced, so the drained facility still produces nothing in the price of money. Next check: effective fed funds drifting up relative to interest on reserves, or reserve balances falling further with reverse repo at zero; a second week of dollar recovery with gold stalling closes this row. August 22 update: three plumbing measures moved the same way in one week. The Fed balance sheet shrank 0.21% to $6.746 trillion on August 19 while overnight reverse repo drained to $0.2 billion, effectively zero, meaning further runoff now comes out of bank reserves rather than out of the facility that has cushioned it, and the dollar index fell 0.86% to 98.80 with EUR/USD +0.89% and gold +5.22%. Neither the gold row nor the rates row holds this: the gold row reads the metal against real yields and official demand, and the rates row reads the long end as a term-premium and supply question, while the observation here is that the shock absorber between them is gone. Nothing is settled, a $0.2 billion facility can sit there for months without funding stress appearing, which is why this is worth watching before repo rates move rather than after.
What would move it
▲ Raise
- Effective fed funds drifts up relative to interest on reserves, or SOFR prints above the fed funds target on more than a month-end.
- Reserve balances fall further with reverse repo already at zero, or the Fed slows or ends runoff in response.
- The dollar keeps falling while gold holds, with no matching move in real yields to explain either.
▼ Lower
- The dollar recovers and gold stalls, marking the week as a positioning move.
- Reserve balances stabilise, repo rates stay anchored, and the drained facility produces no funding pressure across a quarter-end.
Live triggers
- Next check: gold ETF holds below 390 through September 30.partial
