Gold Bear Case

Finding

The single weakest assumption in the upstream bear case is that "war premiums evaporate fast once conflict resolution appears credible" - and it has already broken. Four weeks after the June 17, 2026 US-Iran deal, Trump reinstated the Strait of Hormuz naval blockade on July 12 after Iranian strikes on shipping; Brent jumped 9.6% in its largest one-day move since 2020 (CNBC, Jul 12). The geopolitical-premium channel the bears were counting on to deflate gold is re-accreting in real time, not unwinding.

What changed

(1) The "credible conflict resolution" trigger has failed - the deal lasted 25 days; (2) The Fed-funds futures path is more hawkish than the bear case assumed - effective rate is 3.62% (Jul 14) and futures imply a rise toward ~3.8% by Oct 2026 and ~4.0% by year-end, holding near 4.1% through mid-2027 (StreetStats, CME FedWatch, Jul 14). This is hawkish than the "cuts deferred to mid-late 2027" framing, but it is largely in the price; (3) Gold has held the $4,000-$4,200 band through the early-July geopolitical re-escalation - a stronger floor than the bear case acknowledged (Kitco Jul 3; Fortun

Decision

Hold "consider" stance; do NOT lean further into the bear case at current levels. The original bear thesis required three reinforcing pillars; one (geopolitics) has broken against it in real time, one (Fed) is worse for gold than assumed but priced, and one (ETFs) is playing out as expected. Risk/reward on incremental shorts at $4,030 is asymmetric: ~7% downside to StoneX's $4,000 year-end target versus ~35% upside to $5,500+ if Hormuz remains disrupted. No position change. Wait for July ETF data and Hormuz traffic resolution.

Watch next

(a) WGC July ETF flow release ~Aug 9 - does the $8.9bn June outflow extend or reverse?; (b) Strait of Hormuz shipping volumes and Brent term structure - is the July 12 blockade holding or being lifted?; (c) July 30 FOMC statement - does the Fed retain its hawkish bias markets are pricing?; (d) PBoC July gold reserve print (Aug 7-15) - does central-bank buying continue at ~70t/month?; (e) Morgan Stanley / JPM H2 revisions - any downgrade of the $5,200 / $6,300 targets would be the cleanest bear-case confirmation (Reuters, Jun 24).
