Energy Geopolitical Inflation

Finding

The weakest assumption is not that the oil shock exists; it is that it will automatically become a persistent, economy-wide inflation shock. Current evidence does not support that escalation yet.

What changed

The physical case has become more serious than a normal risk premium: the IEA reports 8.3 million barrels per day of Gulf output still shut in and a 410 million-barrel cumulative stock draw since the war began. But demand has weakened, official forecasts still assume supply recovery, and the forward price curve declines into early 2027.

Decision

Do not change the action from consider to act today. Keep energy as a conditional hedge or monitored opportunity, but do not chase the spot price or treat the event as proof of durable broad inflation.

Watch next

The decision changes if September flow data show no recovery, inventories continue to fall materially, deferred-month oil prices turn higher rather than lower, and core inflation reaccelerates at the same time.
